Motivating reluctant readers?
Trying to inspire your writers?
Looking to engage the boys, but not lose the girls?
I can help. Not only can I connect with young readers, but I can help inspire them to become better writers. Through presentations that explore what it takes to develop an idea into a published book, I help students understand that you don’t have to be a writer to write. Being creative isn’t something that only artists do, it’s something that everyone can do. If they try. During visits I also explain how I overcame rejection and false starts to finally create a successful book series, The Ballpark Mysteries!

I’m happy to customize my presentation for your specific requirements, but my standard presentation for elementary school visits covers a range of topics, including: how children can become writers, specific techniques I use to write the Ballpark Mysteries (setting, character, plot, suspense, etc.), the writing and editing process (with examples of what my editor at Random House does to my stories!), and what it takes to be a successful author. Generally we leave time for plenty of Q&A.
My presentations are best for grades 1-5, but I can also talk about being a writer, the publishing process, and writing and editing to older grades as well.

“…was an incredible opportunity for our young readers and writers…David kept the children entertained, engaged, and yearning to read more of the book in the hour he spent with the students…It was an enjoyable presentation and the students left knowing the writing process was not just something done in the classroom. David’s interaction with the students was warm and welcoming-this was an enjoyable afternoon for all! Thank you.” –Alison Salerno, 4th grade teacher, Boxford Public Schools, Massachusetts
“David Kelly’s discussion regarding what it takes to become an author and to publish a book was eye-opening for the students and allowed them a first-hand tie-in with the curriculum they are taught in their writing classes.” –Boxford Public Schools, Massachusetts
